Modern side of Lima – The Museum of Contemporary Art

When visiting Lima, you will always be reminded of the city’s colonial past and its magnificent buildings in the historic centre. These are undoubtedly an attraction of the Peruvian capital.

Another facet of the country are the pre-Columbian cultures, above all the Incas. Museums are also dedicated to them. But what about contemporary art in South America? With the Incas and the Spanish conquerors, art has not died out.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, MAC for short, was founded in 2013 and has proposed the task of mediating between artists who live now and in the world. It is not limited to the artistic scene of Peru, but integrates the entire South American continent. It is the only one of its kind in Lima.

The museum is located in Barranco, a neighborhood known for its artistic scene. The building in which the museum is located was designed according to its purpose: modern glass cubes that seem to float on an artificial water surface. This is surrounded by green areas, which are accessible to both visitors and interiors.

The architectural elements built with modern materials appear as their own works of art integrated into nature. Even for visitors who find it difficult to enter into contemporary art, the museum and its surroundings are a must.

Art from 1950 until today in the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo

It is difficult to establish a date when presenting contemporary art. With what year, what style should the exhibition begin? It is 1950 in the Museum of Modern Art in Lima.

Of course, the styles known in Europe, Expressionism, Surrealism or Constructivism, also appeared in Latin America and found a new expression. Thanks to the Museum of Contemporary Art, the names Fernando de Szyszlo, Ramiro Llona or Kukuli Velarde will be of importance to the visitor.

In addition to paintings and sculptures, there is an interactive art department on the MAC. What has become increasingly popular with the advent of computers in art are interactive works of art, which the visitor creates with his own actions and movements. Therefore, the viewer becomes an artist. In addition to the permanently exhibited possessions of the museum, special exhibitions are organized to showcase the latest trends in modern art in South America.
